What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the website we collect the data shown on the contact form along with the visitor’s IP address and the user agent string (which identifies the browser) to help us to recognize spam.

An anonymized string of characters, also known as a hash, can be created from your e-mail address and sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. Here is the Gravatar service’s data protection statement: https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once your comment has been released, your profile will be visible in the context of your comment.

Media

If you are a registered user and send photos to the website, you should avoid uploading photos with an EXIF GPS location. Visitors to the website might then be able to download photos stored on the website and to extract details of their location.

Contact form cookies

When you leave a comment on our website it may constitute consent to us storing your name, e-mail address and website in a cookie. That is a convenience function so you no longer need to input all these details when you next write a comment. These cookies are stored for a year.

Cookies

If you have an account and log onto the website we will set a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal information and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in we will set a number of cookies to store your login information and viewing options. Login cookies expire after two days and viewing options cookies after a year. If when logging in you opt to stay logged in, your login will remain effective for two weeks. When you log out of your account the login cookies are deleted.

If you edit or publish an article an additional cookie is stored in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data and merely cross-references the ID of the article you have just edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded content from other websites

Contributions on this website may contain embedded content such as videos, images, articles, etc. Embedded content from other websites behaves in exactly the same way as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites can collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking services and record your interaction with the embedded content, including your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and have logged in to this website.

Analytics services

If you leave a comment, it and the metadata are stored indefinitely. That enables us to recognize and release follow-on comments rather than to waiting list them.

For users who log in to our website we also store the personal information they provide in their user profiles. All users can see, amend or delete their personal information at any time (user names cannot be changed). Administrators of the website can also see and amend this information.

What rights to your data you have

If you have an account on this website or have written comments on it, you can request from us an export of your personal data that we hold, including all data with which you have provided us. In addition, you can request the deletion of all personal data of yours that we have stored. That does not include data we are required to keep for administrative, legal or security reasons.
Where we send your data
Visitors’ comments may be checked by an automated service to identify spam.
